For many women, their 20s are about independence, ambition, exploration, and personal growth. Pregnancy may seem like an obstacle to everything they are working towards. You may have spent years saying:

  • “I am too young to have a baby.”
  • “Let me finish school first.”
  • “I need to establish my career.”
  • “I cannot afford a child right now.”
  • “When I find the right partner, then I will think about having children.”
  • “I have plenty of time!”

And honestly, these are valid considerations. Choosing not to become pregnant before you are ready is a responsible personal decision.Contraception allows women to make informed choices about when, or whether, to have children. There is absolutely nothing wrong with prioritising your goals or deciding that motherhood is not right for you at a particular stage of life. However, there is an important distinction we need to understand: being able to prevent pregnancy today does not guarantee that conceiving will be easy tomorrow.

Fertility is influenced by age, reproductive health, genetics, lifestyle, and other factors. Although many women conceive naturally in their 30s and 40s, fertility generally declines with age, particularly after the mid-30s.The challenge is that fertility is rarely something we think about when everything appears to be working normally.

Dear Young and Free,

If you are in your 20s and pregnancy is not part of your plans right now, you are allowed to make that choice. If you are in your 30s and wondering why conception has become difficult, you are not alone. And if you are in your 40s and still hoping to become a mother, your feelings, questions, and grief deserve compassion, not judgement.Your journey is yours. Nobody should pressure you into having children before you are ready, and nobody should dismiss your concerns when you are ready to try.But please do not let the assumption that you have unlimited time prevent you from learning about your reproductive health. You do not have to panic. You do not have to rush into motherhood. You simply need access to the right information so you can make decisions that are right for you.Because sometimes, the most powerful thing we can do for our future selves is to ask questions today.
